Gainsborough Trinity were originally formed as Trinity Recreationalists, a church based side. The club joined the Midland League in 1889 and won the championship in 1891. They were elected to Division Two of the Football League for the 1896-97 season.
Trinity had an undistinguished League career and in 1912 they suffered the indignity of losing their place in the League to their local rivals Lincoln City.
They currently play in the 6th tier of the English Pyramid.
