Gone but not forgotten- Leeds City

Leeds City have the dubious distinction of being the only team to be booted out of the League whilst the season was in progress.
Formed in 1904 they were elected to the League in 1905- the League favoured applications from clubs based in non soccer areas (Yorkshire, aside from Sheffield, being very much a Northern Union region).

Div.2 expelled

In  1912–13 Herbert Chapman became club secretary. His involvement with the club during the war years nearly deprived English Football of one of it's authentic geniuses.

When club Directors refused to cooperate in an FA / Football League investigation into irregular payments Leeds City were expelled from the League and 5 club officials, including Chapman, were banned from football for life. The irregularities arose from the club's failure to follow the Football League's directive, set out in 1915, that players could only receive expenses for playing in the stop gap wartime competitions, In effect all players were amateurs for the duration- no one was supposed to make a living from the game.

Here is one version of the events, gleaned from contemporary press reports:

Mr Connor, former chairman of the board of directors told the press (The Yorkshire Evening Post) that his syndicate (effectively the banned parties) had taken over the club in 1914, when, he said, the club was on the verge of collapse.
Mr Connor said that the club was then (October 1919) actually in credit.
Mr Connor states that when Herbert Chapman left the club to do his war work he recommended that his assistant (referred to by Mr Connor as Mr Chapman’s ‘personal employee’) Mr Cripps, should take on the financial management of the club. Mr Connor claims to have been opposed to this. After one season the club’s books were in such a chaotic condition that Mr Connor threatened to resign.
Mr Cripps was replaced by an accountant and went back to the team selection role. However, the directors did not want Cripps to travel to away matches with the team, preferring instead to send one of their own number. This led to the players threatening to go on strike.
Relationships got very strained and the directors decided to fire Cripps, at which point he made accusations of financial impropriety against the club.
Cripps took legal action, claiming £400 but ending up with £50. He had to return any correspondence regarding the club to their solicitor and sign an undertaking not to make public any of the club’s affairs.

Charlie Copeland

Defender Charlie Copeland was the next key figure. He rejected the clubs pay offer of £3 10 s a week, and wrote to the directors saying that if they didn't pay him £6 a week he would blow the whistle regarding illegal payments. When his request was ignored and he was placed on the free transfer list, Copeland went to the FA.
The FA investigating committee requested access to the club’s documents, and the directors, knowing them to containing evidence of irregular payments to players, declined to cooperate.

Gone but not forgotten- New Brighton Tower

It's like something from a landscape of dreams- a Lancashire League side playing in a stadium capable of holding 80,000 in the shadow of  a 173 m tower...

New Brighton Tower was the tallest structure in England. It was built as New Brighton emerged as a popular resort in the 1890s. As a means of further income generation the company responsible, The Tower and Recreation Company, also built a multi sport stadium called the Tower Athletic Ground. The Tower and Recreation Company was a consortium of primarily Manchester based businessmen. They speculated that the football stadium would generate a great income. All they needed was a team.
New Brighton Tower FC was assembled in 1897 and was admitted to the Lancashire League. Having won the Lancashie League in their fist season the club were elected to the newly expanded Division 2 for the 1898-99 season.

Sam Raybould  featured for Tower in 1899-1900, bagging 10 goals in 13 appearances, leading to Tom Watson signing him for Liverpool.

The club also employed the services of proven stars such as Scotsmen Jack Bell (Everton), Bob Petrie (Gainsborough Trinity, The Wednesday, Southampton), and England international Alf Milward (who had made 200+ appearances for Everton).
Another former Evertonian to serve was the splendidly named Welsh international Smart Arridge.
As can be seen from their League positions, it wasn't results that were a problem for Tower, but finances. It wasn't a case of build and they will come- the ground capable of holding 80,000 attracted numbers in the region of  2-3,000.
A visit of Manchester City drew a gate of 10,000, otherwise attendances were nowhere near those of their Merseyside neighbours. During the 3 seasons that New Brighton Tower were in the Football League Everton and Liverpool were established in the top half of the first division, with Liverpool winning the title in the year that New Brighton Tower disbanded.

Glossop (North End)

Glossop North End currently play in the North West Counties League Premier Division. founded in 1886, they played in the Combination and Midlands League before joining the Football League in 1898–99
They were promoted to Division One after just one season, but lasted just one season in the top flight.
On being promoted they dropped the North End from their name. Glossop is the smallest town ever to boast a league club. A remarkable statistic is that the population of the town in the 1910s was about 21,000- and in 1914 10,700 turned up at North Road to see an FA cup tie against Preston North End.
The club were financed by local cotton magnate and Member of Parliament, Samuel Hill-Wood.

Among the big names to turn out for the club were John Goodall (34 games 1900-03) , Fred Spiksley (5 games 1904-05), Archie Goodall (30 games 1904-05) and Bob Jack (64 games, 1902-03).

Gone but not forgotten - Loughborough Athletic and Football Club

Loughborough Athletic and Football Club, frequently, erroneously, referred to as Loughborough Town, graduated to the League from The Midland League.
Their 5 seasons in the League were undistinguished, other than by the fact that they were punished with ground closure for crowd trouble 3 times!  The grand finale came in 1899-1900- 18 goals for and 100 against, 1 win, 6 draws and 27 defeats (including all of their away games) giving a total of 8 points out of a possible 68. This is the joint lowest ever points total.

Accounts of the final season tell of financial worries and public indifference, the background against which they enjoyed a 2-1 win over Burton Swifts on January 6th.

Between the home game from which the complaint arose and the  ground closure being announced Loughborough had played the return match with Woolwich Arsenal at the Manor Ground and lost 12-0.

Formed In 1878 as Lunar Rovers (the founders were shop workers whose long working hours meant that their only opportunity to get a game was to play by moonlight!), the club was admitted to Sheffield New Football Association in 1879.
The charming name was changed to Rotherham FC in 1882, and in 1884 they made their FA Cup debut.
Having added Town to the name Rotherham were founder members of the Midland League (1889-90) and won the title for 2 years in succession prior to being elected to the Football League.
After losing League status in 1896 the original Rotherham Town was wound up.

A new Rotherham FC was formed in 1900. From 1903 they played in the Midland League along with Rotherham County.
Rotherham FC adopted the Rotherham Town name again in 1905.
County were elected to the Football League in 1919. In May 1925 the two clubs merged to form Rotherham United.

Grimsby Town
The Cleethorpes side originally known as Grimsby Pelham have had 2 spells in the Football League. Members of the original Combination, they unsuccessfully applied to join the League in 1889 and instead joined the Alliance. Their first League experience lasted from 1892-1910:

Lincoln City
The Imps have been in and out of the Football League more than any other club. 5 spells in the league- 4 during our period (pre 1937). 104 seasons in the League all told, never in the top tier. They currently play in the 5th tier of the English pyramid system.
