Penarol vs Albion 1900

Peñarol did not officially adopt the name of the suburb in which they played until 1913-14, but it seems that the name was used as a shorthand for the The Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club long before that.

Why these two clubs should be contesting  la Gran Copa de Oro de la Liga Argentina is a mystery to me...or is my Spanish letting me down?
The two sides played each other in the first round of the Tie Cup  on  5.8.1900, Albion winning 1-0 after extra time at Deutscher's ground.1900 was also the first season of league football in Uruguay and CURCC were undefeated  (they played Albion on June 10th. I'm not sure of the date of the second meeting).
Albion and CURCC were the original big two in Uruguay football. Both founded in 1891 they met on 25 occasions between 1892 and 1899. Albion generally enjoyed the upper hand in these 19th century encounters.
Peñarol, of course, went on to be a continuing major force, whereas Albion dropped out of the top flight in 1908 and have been involved in minor leagues ever since.

Juan Harley

John Harley was born in Glasgow.
In 1906 he moved to Argentina (he was a railway engineer) and played for Club Atlético del Ferrocarril Oeste de Buenos Aires. Following a friendly between the two clubs in 1908, he crossed the River Plate to  C.U.R.C.C.(Peñarol) for whom he played until 1920.
'El Yoni' made 17 appearances for Uruguay between 1909-1916 , including 7 as player/coach. He is credited with bringing the 'Scottish' passing approach to Uruguayan football.

The Tie Cup first held in July and August 1900, was contested by representatives of the ArgentinaRosario (Santa Fe) and Uruguay football associations. It is one of the the earliest international club football tournaments.

AlbionWilliam Leslie Poole, the father of Uruguayan football, was the founder of The English High school in Montevideo. In 1891 his students, led by the splendidly named 18 year old,  Henry Candid Lichtenberger, founded a club that they called Football Association, intended to be exclusively for Uruguayan born players. Their earliest games were against Poole's own club, Montevideo Cricket, who stuffed them. The youngsters changed the name of their club to Albion in honour of the English origins of the Association game.

Uruguay Athletic - founded in the suburb of Punta Carretas in1898. Their 3rd place (of 4) in 1900 was their joint best ever. Folding in 1903 they chalked up an unenviable:
Played: 36,Won: 9,Drawn: 2, Lost : 25, For: 26, Against: 91.

Deutscher- unsurprisingly founded by the German community in Montevideo, they were active from 1896 to 1909.
