Roose saves from Morris
The evolution of halftone printing techniques led to the widespread use of photographs in the mass media. The Athletic News was prominent among the publications that brought this exciting presentation of football action to the masses.
As in the previous post, we have 2 Welsh players in opposition here.
Dick Roose of Sunderland saves from Gren Morris of Nottingham Forest. The match, at Roker Park, ended in a 2-2 draw (15.10.10).

The Umpire's Whistle 1872
I have read a great number of speculative accounts regarding the introduction of the whistle (logically for use by umpires rather than the referee). The common denominators tend to be the involvement of Nottingham Forest and one of the Sheffield clubs. A date of 1878 is often featured.
The following item from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 19th March 1872 should lay some of this speculation to rest:
The following item from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 19th March 1872 should lay some of this speculation to rest:
The snippet of information is rather tantalizing. The article refers to a meeting of The Sheffield Football Clubs Association. It's unclear who Mr Brown was? There was a Mr Brown on the committee of the Heeley club, but that's rather tenuous.
In January 1872 Sheffield Norfolk played Forest, winning 5-1. I can find no record of the officials.
The return match on 09.03.72 at Nottingham saw Forest win 1-0. Messrs Pashley and Hussey were the umpires.
Incidentally, the pea whistle came into being in 1884, the legendary Acme Thunderer, so prior to this umpires would have used 'Police' type whistles.
Here is my grandfather's Acme whistle, which would have seen service in the Swansea area in the 1930s.

Lloyd's Weekly London Newspaper (23.11.90)
Lindley was England's leading goalscorer before Steve Bloomer. He scored 14 goals in 13 internationals.

The Post Football Guide 1905
From the Nottingham Evening Post, August 1905.
The appetite of working class and lower middle class men and boys for football in the media was as great then as it is now. The difference, of course, was the limited means of providing the information. Newspapers and magazines were always ready to milk a few pounds out of the game by publishing special editions and yearbooks.
Nottingham readers had just endured a fairly miserable season.
1904-05 Forest had finished 16th in Division 1, while County were bottom in 18th, escaping relegation only by the expansion of the league.
1905-06 was little better for County. They claimed 16th spot whilst Forest were relegated in 19th.
10.4.14
Nottingham Forest v Walsall Swifts 1884
Parkside Ground was Forest's 4th home ground. They moved there from Trent Bridge in 1882 and called it home for 3 years.
There were 3 England internationals (or future internationals) on each side-
Forest: John Sands (1 cap, 1880), Edward Leighton (1 cap, 1886) & Dr Tinsley Lindley (13 Caps,1886-1891).
28.3.14
Sam Weller Widdowson
In 1874 the Nottingham Forest skipper Sam Weller Widdowson decided to protect his shins with modified cricket pads, cut down to size.
Widdowson made 1 appearance for England in 1880, by which time he had already been chairman of Forest for a year.
Initially the shin guards were seen as a novelty, and were even a source of derision. They were also something of a luxury (only one player in the unnamed Scottish team above seems to be wearing them). Partick Thistle, on the other hand are far better protected...
16.3.14
Nottingham
The following year Forest was founded by bandy players (bandy being a stick and ball game). James Catton, who spent some time living in Nottingham, states that initially County were considered more of an upper crust outfit, with Forest being more associated with the city people, workers and small businessmen.
Here's a timeline of the early years:
The 1878 FA Cup match:
If the reporter got the formations right it looks like Notts (County) were playing a good old fashioned 1-3-6, whereas Forest must surely have been the first team in the history of the game to line up in a 4-2-4!
