El pez volador

Yustrich is at the top- Jaime Lema (San Lorenzo de Almagro) below.

Juan Yustrich was Boca's first choice goalkeeper from 1932-37, winning league titles in 1934 and 1935. He represented Argentina once (in 1940).

Perinetti, Recanatini & Onzari

This 1932 edition of El Grafico featured 3 seasoned campaigners.

Natalio Perinetti (Racing Club de Avellaneda)
Perinetti's ghost is said to haunt the Estadio Juan Domingo Perón, though he never played there. He won 5 Primera División titles with Racing and was capped 7 times by Argentina.

Humberto Recanatini (Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata)
Recanatini was 34 when he joined Gimnasia. He had represented Argentina 17 times (1919-31).

Cesáreo Onzari (Club Atlético Huracán)
The scorer of the original Gol Olímpico won 15 caps (1922–24).

José Laguna

Image result

José Durand Laguna, known as 'El Negro', was a prolific forward for Huracán.
He represented Argentina 4 times, scoring 3 goals.
His debut came in unusual circumstances. At the 1916 South American Championship of Nations Laguna went to watch the Argentina vs Brazil game at Gimnasia y Esgrima in Buenos Aires (10.07.16).
Alberto Ohaco was unable to play and Laguna was called from the stand to fill the vacancy.
He gave Argentina the lead in the 10th minute. The game finished 1-1.
Laguna later moved to Paraguay where he played for Olimpia. He also managed the Paraguay national side at 2 South American Championships and the 1930 World Cup.

Goal by Scarone

The 1928 Olympic Final replay.
Roberto Figueroa gets past Segundo Medici and sends in a cross; René Borjas beats Paternoster and heads the ball into the path of the oncoming Hector Scarone. 'Yours, Hector!'
2-1 Uruguay, 73rd minute.
The illustration is not contemporary as the artist has drawn a D (penalty arc).
I have seen evidence of the D being used on the continent before 1937 (I will cover this in a later post- someday!)
At 3:54 in the film it does look like there is a D!

Looks like it was an action packed game.

Irish Association Football in Argentina

Lobos Athletic Club 1892

Here is a link to the article Irish Association Football in Argentina by Víctor Raffo.
The influence of Irish settlers on the development of football in Argentina, particularly the Lobos Athletic and Club Atlético Porteño is examined. Lobos A.C were important in the development of Alumni A.C.
Lobos were also the first Argentine side to play abroad: In 1899 they traveled to Montevideo, beating  Albión (2-1) and Peñarol (2-0) before a revolution forced their departure aboard a battleship!
