Catalunya v France, 1912

This image is from a card issued by Chocolates Amatller of Barcelona. It shows action from the Catalunya v France match played at camp del carrer Indústria on 01.12.12 (the rear of the card dates the match as being played on 01.01.13). Catalunya won 1-0. 
The player referred to in the caption is Gabriel Bau (Futbol Club Espanya).

Samitier

It seems that the transition from club to international football is not always easy! 
Between 1919 and 1932 Josep Samitier scored 333 goals in 454 games for Barcelona (strike rate 0.73 goals per game). In his 21 internationals (1920-1931) he netted just twice. In the 21 matches he played Spain scored 38 goals and lost only 3 times. Samitier played at right half in the Spain team.  He also played for Catalunya.

Alcántara for Spain

Paulino Alcántara first represented Catalunya as an 18 year old in 1915. He also represented the Philippines in the 1917 Far Eastern Games. It is likely that he played in all 3 of the Philippines' games, the last of which was abandoned due to fighting.
On returning to Europe he continued to represent Catalunya.
He would have been expected to represent Spain when they made their entry into international football at the 1920 Olympics, but he was unavailable due to his medical studies.
 Alcántara made his Spain debut in 1921. He played 5 internationals, scoring 6 goals:

Joan Gamper

Hans Kamper was instrumental in the foundation of FC Zurich in 1896. He was an all round sportsman, interested in athletics, cycling, tennis, golf and even Rugby (which he played when living in France).

In 1899 he travelled to Barcelona on route to Africa. Whilst he was in Catalunya he decided to form another team to satisfy his passion for football. Consequently FC Barcelona was founded.  

Thanks to Catalan attempts to pronounce his name, Hans Kamper became Kans or Joan Gamper. He played 48 games for Barcelona (1899 -1903), scoring over 100 goals. As a player he was a winner of Copa Macaya (1902) and Copa Barcelona (1903)

An affluent businessman and naturalized Catalan, Gamper was president of Barcelona on 5 occasions (1908-09, 1910-13, 1917-19, 1921-23 and 1924-25).

During the 1920's the right-wing Government punished Barcelona for the Catalan nationalist tendencies of their supporters. Their stadium was closed for 6 months.
Gamper later suffered depression and had financial difficulties. He took his own life in 1930. 

Catalunya

Catalunya (Catalonia) pioneered  the development of organized football in Spain.
Football Associació de Catalunya was founded in 1900, the first football association in 

Spain.
A Catalan representative team appeared as early as 1904, and over the years Catalunya have played fixtures against a variety of opposition. Catalunya won the regional championship, the Copa del Príncipe de Asturias, in  1916, 1924 and 1926.
