Ferencváros Xmas and New Year tour, 1911-12

In 1911 December Ferencváros embarked on a tour that took them to Germany and England. The Budapest press was cynical about the tour, fearing that Ferencváros' reputation (and therefore the reputation of Hungarian football as a whole) would not be enhanced
5 of the party, including Imre Schlosser, joined in Munich, where they had been representing Hungary in a 4-1 win over Germany.
After 4 high scoring victories in Germany the Hungarians sailed to England where they were greeted by representatives of the FA and Vivian Woodward. the high point was considered a win over Woking in England.
Woking had joined the Isthmian League that season (placing them among leading southern Amateurs such as West Norwood, Nunhead, Dulwich Hamlet and London Caledonians). Ferencváros took a 2-0 lead in heavy conditions, which were remarked to hamper the visitors' passing style. The game was ended prematurely due to theses adverse conditions.

Ferencváros lost their final match 4-1 against English Wanderers (a strong amateur selection featuring Olympians such as Berry, Hoare and Woodard) . The tourists were also guests at an amateur international in which England beat Wales 10-0.

Incidentally, the attendances for the 2 fixtures in England were not great- 800 at Woking and only 1000 at Stamford Bridge.

News of Ferencváros' successes had been warmly received in Budapest, and the team returned home to a triumphal reception.

Meuwsen beker (Amsterdam) 1912-1914

1912
In April 1912 an Easter tournament was played at Amsterdam- the trophy was donated by famous hat-dealer, J. S. Meuwsen.
The following teams participated:

Ajax (Netherlands)
Antwerp  (Belgium)

FC Lloyd (Germany)
A Bremen club, probably representatives of the Dynamo Lloyd automotive factory.

GVC (Netherlands)
Wageningen based GVC (Go Ahead-Victoria Combination) are one of Netherlands oldest clubs, formed in 1903 as a merger of Go Ahead (founded 1886) and Victoria (founded 1889). In the seasons 1910-1911 and 1911-1912 GVC were runners up to Sparta Rotterdam in the national championships. The games were held in Het Houten Stadion.

1913
For the 1913 edition Ajax were joined by:

Werder Bremen (Germany)
Founded in 1899- the Green-Whites were founder members of the DFB (1900).

Cercle S. Brugeois  (Belgium)
Founded in 1899 as Cercle Sportif Brugeois by former students of the Saint Francis Xavier Institute. Cercle won the Belgian national championship in the 1910–11 season.

West Norwood  (England)
This tournament teaches us much about the gulf in class between English and continental football at the time. Although London's West Norwood had employed professional players since 1903 they were in the Isthmian League and the season had seen them finish bottom with a record of p 20 w 3 d 3 l 14. They had last played in the FA Cup in 1906- 07, losing 9-1 to Accrington Stanley of the Lancashire Combination. They did however win the London Senior Cup that seasonWest Norwood were badly affected by the relatively successful Crystal Palace moving into their neighbourhood.
The club had originally been formed as Stanley FC in 1887. They became West Norwood in 1889. Having played in a variety of locations in south London they settled at Herne Hill. In 1915 Crystal Palace of the Southern League took over this stadium and West Norwood slipped into decline.

West Norwood returned to defend their title, Ajax again hosted. The other participants were:

Stade Français (France)
Now better known for Rugby Union, Stade had been operating a football section since 1888.

Groningen VC   (Netherlands)
West Norwood notched up a second successive victory over Ajax. Their showing in the  Isthmian league had also been improved- 10th out of 11 ( p 20 w 4 d 3 l 13).

London Caledonians

There has never been a professional football team with London in its name. This probably dates to the very earliest days of the Football Association when nearly all the member clubs were London based, and with the  advent of  proletarian and eventually professionalized  football, the metropolitan area being so large, local clubs had developed all over the city.
London Caledonians was very different, however. Following a trend seen in Rugby, it was essentially an exiles club for Scotsmen living in London (there was also a London Welsh club in the 1890s).  London Caledonians was founded in 1886 and was originally based in Leyton, later moving to Holloway. In their early years they played leading clubs such as Aston Villa and Queen's Park.
Caledonians had an impressive honour roll:

FA Amateur Cup winners -1923
Isthmian League Champions- 1905–061907–081911–121912–131913–141924–25
Middlesex Senior Cup winners- 1889–90, 1890–91, 1898–99, 1899–1900, 1934–35
London Senior Cup winners-1899–1900, 1907–08, 1914–15, 1922–26, 1927–28

Caledonians went out of existence during the 1939-45 war.
