Cohen Weenan Football Captains 1907-08 (46-60)

Note: All the teams featured in this selection spent the 1907-08 season in The Southern League and their finishing position is shown in brackets at the end of each entry. 





46 Jimmy 'Punch' McEwen- Norwich City. 35 year old full back McEwen was effectively player manager at Norwich. He had been an FA Cup winner with Bury in 1903 and would later work for Herbert Chapman at Arsenal.  (Southern League 15th). 

47 Bob Hawkes - Luton Town.  Winger Hawkes made 5 appearances for England and also played in the gold medal winning Great Britain (England amateurs) team at the 1908 Olympic Games. He made 349 appearances for Luton in a 19 year career. (18th). 

48 Alf Hitch- Watford. Centre half Hitch had First Division experience (Nottingham Forest) and joined Watford from Queens Park Rangers in 1906. (14th).



49 Albert Buick-Portsmouth.Scottish international center half who had enjoyed success with  Heart of Midlothian. A number of his former teammates joined him at Portsmouth. (9th).

50 Walter Bull-Tottenham Hotspur. Walter Bull had been offered the manager's job at Northampton Town for the 1907-08 season, but he had a change of heart, and his teammate Herbert Chapman took his place.  Tottenham were elected to football league the following season. (7th). 


51 Charlie Clark- Plymouth Argyle. Clark was an irregular at Everton when he moved to Argyle to play under Frank Brettell, another former Everton player. Clark made 272 first team appearances in his 6 seasons with Plymouth. (2nd).





52 Charlie Craig- Bradford Park Avenue. Craig joined Bradford AFC from Nottingham Forest. Geographically Bradford were an unlikely team to find in the Southern League. This was their only season, as they were elected to the football league the following season. (13th).

53 Frank Thorpe - Southampton. Centre half  Thorpe won the FA Cup with Bury in 1903.He joined The Saints in 1907. (11th).

54 Billy Yenson- Queens Park Rangers. Centre forward Yenson appeared in the 1904 FA Cup final for Bolton Wanderers. He started his career with West Ham United and returned there in 1908. (Winners).



55 Herbert Smith- Reading. Smith was a left back who made 4 appearances for England between 1903 and 1906. In 1908 he played for Great Britain (England amateurs) at the Olympic Games, winning a gold medal. (12th). 

56 Jack Smith - Bristol Rovers. Smith had played  First Division football with Wolverhampton Wanderers from 1903-06. He scored 38 goals in 104 league games for Wolves. 1907–1908 was his only season at Rovers, as his career continued with an assortment of Southern League clubs.
(6th).

57 Steve Smith - New Brompton. Smith was an outside left who had been capped once by England (1895) and played the majority of his football for Aston Villa, winning 5 First Division Championships and an FA Cup.
Being on the small side, he often suffered from the lungeous opponent, and while with the Villa received more than his share of hard knocks. Quiet and unassuming, he proved a most unselfish partner, and could always be relied upon to do his utmost. A modest winner and a good loser.

58 General Stevenson-Milwall. Stevenson wasn't a General- that was his name! The full back had played for Liverpool and Barnsley before joining Millwall in 1903. In 7 years with the club he made 318 appearances. (3rd).

59 Sam Meredith - Leyton.  Sam Meredith was the older brother of the legendary Billy. He began at Chirk AAA and played for Stoke before moving to Leyton. He was capped 8 times for Wales. (19th).


60 George Parsonage-Brentford. Half-back Parsonage was banned for life by the  FA in 1909 for offhandedly demanding a £50 signing fee to move from Fulham to Chesterfield (the maximum allowed was  £10, and Parsonage maintained that he had been joking). (16th).

Cohen Weenan Football Captains 1907-08 (31-45)



31 Arthur Waters- Stockport County. Close to death in 1905, suffering pneumonia in the season he joined Stockport, left back Waters went on to make 165 first team appearances for the club. County came 13th in Division 2 in 1907-08.

32 Billy Wooldridge -Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wooldridge joined Wolves from Wednesbury Old Athletic in 1900, and scored 90 goals in 356 appearances for the club. He captained Wolves to FA Cup victory in  1908. Dropped back from forward to centre half later in his career. Wanderers finished the 1907-08 season in 9th place in Division 2.


33 Gordon Wright- Hull City. Vicar Gordon Wright was a former Cambridge University and Corinthians winger.  He made 168 appearances for Hull in a 7 year career that ended when he emigrated to South Africa, where he had toured with the FA in 1910. City were 8th in Division 2 in 1907-08.




34 Harry Ross- Fulham. Scotsman Ross joined Fulham from Burnley in 1907.
one of those players who can play equally well at right or left back. Physically he is the man for the place. Twenty four years of age, he weighs over thirteen stone and stands a trifle more than five feet ten. He is a vigorous tackler and a powerful kick, and possesses all the attributes of mind and temper that go to make a first class player- The Brechin Advertiser (1905).
1907-08 was Fulham's first season in the Football League, and they made 4th spot in Division 2.


35 George Robinson- Bradford City. Full back Robinson made 343 league appearances for Bradford City (1903–1915). Bradford City finished the 1907-08 season on top of the Second Division.

36 Jack Scott- Blackpool. A defender, Scott played in over 300 league matches in 11 seasons with Blackpool. 15th in Division 2 for the 1907-08 season.




37 William Simpson - Lincoln City. The last of Simpson's 151 appearances for City came in December 1907. In the 1907-08 season Lincoln won just 9 games, finished bottom of the Second Division and were not re elected to the league.


38 Herbert Munday-Chesterfield. The Chesterfield legend made 314 Football League appearances for the club, scoring 107 goals. He represented Sheffield FA against the London FA in 1893.In 1908 he began playing at left-half. Chesterfield finished the 1907-08 season in 19th place in Division 2 and were successfully re elected.

39 Arnold Oxspring- Barnsley.   In the 1907-08 season Barnsley finished 16th in Division 2.



 40 Ted Pheasant -West Bromwich Albion.  Pheasant spent 9 seasons at  Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining the Albion for £500 in 1904. He appeared in 152 games for Albion in all competitions, scoring 22 goals. He died in 1910 aged 33, 2 weeks after signing for Leicester Fosse. West Brom were out of sorts in 1907-08, managing only 5th in Division 2.

41 Wilf Innerd- Crystal Palace. Innerd made 133 appearances for Palace (1905 - 1909).the 1907-08 season saw Palace finish in 4th place in the Southern League. 

42 Billy Jones- Swindon Town. Right half Billiy Jones spent most of his career at Bristol City. He was capped once by England (1901) and Joined Swindon from Tottenham in 1907 at the age of 34. Swindon ended the 1907-08 season 5th in the Southern League.




43 Harry Kent - Brighton & Hove Albion. The clean living centre-half later managed Watford. Brighton came 17th in the Southern League in 1907-08.

44 George Kitchen -West Ham United. Kitchen joined West Ham from Everton in 1905 and promptly became the first-ever goalkeeper to score on his debut (with a penalty). He was with the Irons for 7 seasons,scoring 6 goals in his 205 appearances. He was also a professional golfer. In the 1907-08 season West Ham finished 10th in the Southern League.

45 David McCartney -Northampton Town. The centre half was captain of the Northampton Town team under the management of Herbert Chapman. This Northampton team was arguably the first English side to employ (through Chapman) modern management techniques and a systematic tactical approach to games. Town were a Southern League club in 1907-08, finishing 8th.

16 Bob McRoberts- Chelsea. The Scottish centre forward was already 31 when he joined Chelsea from Small heath. He also served as a defender. was Chelsea's first ever £100 signing, playing in their first League game in September 1905. McRoberts made 104 league appearances for the Blues, who finished the 1907–08 season 13th in Division 1.

17 William Maxwell - Bristol City. Forward Maxwell joined City in 1905. The Scotsman played 125 games and scored 61 goals for Bristol. After retiring as a player he managed the Belgium national team. Bristol City were 10th in Division 1 in 1907–08.


18 Ernest Needham- Sheffield 
United.  Needham was a giant of the game  In 19 years at Sheffield United he made 554 appearances and scored 65 goals, winning one First Division Championship and 2 FA Cups.  An England captain, he made 16 international appearances. Sheffield United ended the 1907–08 season at 17th in Division 1.




19 Alex Raisbeck- Liverpool. The Scottish international played 340 games for Liverpool between 1898 and 1909, winning the First Division Championship on 2 occasions. 8th place in for Liverpool in 1907–08.



20 Charlie Roberts - Manchester United. The model centre half won two First Division Championships and the FA Cup with United, for whom he made  299 appearances. Remarkably he only played 3 internationals for England. United were league champions in 1907–08.

21 Tom Holford - Stoke. Tom Holford left Stoke for Manchester City at the end of the 1907-08 season. During his time at Stoke he played in  269 first team games. He was capped once by England. Stoke ended the 1907–08 season at 10th in Division 2 but resigned from the league due to financial difficulties.




 22  Tommy Hynds - Leeds City. Hynds only spent one season at Leeds City. The Scottish centre half had previously played for Celtic, Manchester City and Woolwich Arsenal. On leaving Leeds he finished his playing days at Heart of Midlothian. Leeds City ended the 1907–08 season at 12th in  Division 2.


23 Bill Jenkinson - Gainsborough Trinity. Centre forward Jenkinson was captain of Trinity in the 1907-08 season, in which they finished 11th in Division 2. 


 24 H.H Fletcher- Grimsby Town. Grimsby Town reached the Quarter-finals of the FA Cup  but having come 18th in  Division 2 had to apply for re-election ( in which they were successful ).




25 Bill Henderson - Clapton Orient. Much traveled Scottish right back Henderson made 47 league appearances for Orient in the seasons 1906–1908. In 1907-08 they finished 14th in Division 2.

26 Billy Bannister- Leicester Fosse. Bannister was a defender who had won 2 England caps in 1902 when playing for Burnley and Bolton Wanderers. He worked as a coal miner before turning professional. Fosse were runners up in  Division 2 in the 1907-08 season, winning promotion.


27 Fred Barron- Burnley. Pictured here in  the club's unlucky green strip, Barron made 423 appearances in thirteen seasons with Burnley. He played at wing-half. Burnley finished the 1907-08 Division 2 season in 7th.




28 James Comrie - Glossop North End. Comrie spent only one season at Glossop during the course of his travels. A native of Stirling he played most of his first class football for Third Lanark. Comrie was killed in action in 1916. The 1907-08 season saw Glossop finish 17th in Division 2.

29 David Walders - Oldham Athletic.  Centre half Walders joined Oldham Athletic at the start of the 1907–08 season and spent 4 seasons at the club.  It was Oldham's first season in the league and they did well, coming 3rd in Division 2. 


30 Ben Warren-Derby County. Ben Warren played 22 times for England. He made 242 Football League appearances for Derby, scoring 19 goals.1907-08 was his last season at Derby. He moved to Chelsea and after suffering a career threatening injury he began to suffer from mental health problems, including paranoid delusions. Sadly he died in a mental hospital in 1917.

Derby County were 6th in  Division 2 at the conclusion of the 1907–08 campaign.

Cohen Weenan Football Captains 1907-08 (1-15)


Jock Logan-Aston Villa. The Scottish defender played 157 games for Villa between 1905 and 1912. Logan began his career at  Queen's Park and later played for Glasgow Rangers. Aston Villa finished the 1907-08 season 2nd in the First Division.

 2 Tommy Crawshaw -The Wednesday. The centre half played Played 465 games for The Wednesday in a 13 year career, winning 2 FA Cups and 2 First Division titles. Crawshaw won 10 England caps (1895-1904). The Wednesday were 5th in the First Division in the 1907-08 season.

Bob Crompton- Blackburn Rovers. Crompton was capped 41 times by  England (1902 -1918), and captained his country on 22 occasions. Between 1896 and 1920 he made 530 league appearances for Rovers, who finished the 1907-08 season 15th in the First Division.



Jack Dewhurst- Bury. Jack Dewhurst was a centre forward with Blackburn Rovers, enjoying one successful season during which he scored 17 goals. He later played as an inside forward and during his time at Bury became a centre half. Bury finished 7th in the First Division in 1907-08.

5 Alex Gardner- Newcastle United.  A Scottish right half who made 314 appearances for Newcastle, winning 3 First Division titles titles and appearing in 3 FA Cup finals. Gardner's career was ended by injury in 1910. Newcastle United were placed 4th in the First Division in 1907-08.

 6 Grenville Morris - Nottingham Forest. Morris was a Welsh international (21 caps, 1896-1912). The Prince of the Inside-Lefts still holds Forest's all-time scoring record with 217 goals in over 400 appearances between 1898 and 1913. Forest ended the 1907-08 season in 9th place in the First Division.



 7  Arthur Griffiths- Notts County. Full back Griffiths made 163 appearances for Notts County between 1904 and 1911 after joining them from Bristol Rovers. At the end of the 1907-08 season Notts County narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 18th in the First Division.

Sam Aitken - Middlesbrough. The Scotsman  made 242 appearances for Boro as a right half or centre half between 1903 and 1910.1907-08 saw Boro come 6th in the First Division.

John Bell - Preston North End.  Following successes at Dumbarton, Everton and Celtic, Bell joined Preston in 1903 at the age of 34. The outside right gained 10 Scotland caps (1890-1900). Preston came 12th in the First Division in 1907-08.




10 Arthur Bridgett - Sunderland. Outside left Bridgett made 11 appearances for England. He scored 116 goals in 347 league and cup games in 10 seasons at Sunderland. 1907-08 saw Sunderland finish 16th in the First Division.

Jack Taylor- Everton. Taylor played 456 games for Everton from 1896 to 1910. He was capped 4 times by Scotland in the 1890s and was an FA Cup winner in 1906. Everton finished the 1907-08 season as 11th in the First Division.

12 Irvine Thornley- Manchester City. The butcher from Glossop won a solitary England cap in 1907 and turned out  204 times for Manchester City, scoring 93 goals at  centre-forward. City were 3rd in the First Division in the 1907-08 season.



13 Walter Wigmore - Birmingham City, Wigmore made more than 400 appearances in the Football League playing for Sheffield UnitedGainsborough Trinity and Small Heath / Birmingham in a 17-year career. He began as an inside forward and later played centre-half. Between 1899 and 1912 he made over 300 league appearances for Birmingham (and Small Heath 
as they were previously known). In the 1907-08 season  Birmingham finished 20th (bottom) of the
First Division.

14 Percy Sands - Woolwich Arsenal. Sands was a schoolmaster (he joined Arsenal in 1903 and turned professional in 1906). He made 327 league appearances. The 1907-08 First Division table has Woolwich Arsenal in 14th place.

15 David “Spider” Stokes - Bolton Wanderers. The highly rated  
outside right played 420 games in a  seventeen year  career beginning in 1902. Bolton Wanderers were relegated at the end of the 1907-08 season, having finished 19th in the First Division.
