The evolution of halftone printing techniques led to the widespread use of photographs in the mass media. The Athletic News was prominent among the publications that brought this exciting presentation of football action to the masses.
As in the previous post, we have 2 Welsh players in opposition here.
Dick Roose of Sunderland saves from Gren Morris of Nottingham Forest. The match, at Roker Park, ended in a 2-2 draw (15.10.10).

Liverpool v Sunderland 07.11.96
7th of November 1896, a match played at Anfield in rain and fog, Ned Doig (top right) protesting that the light was too dim for the match to continue. Liverpool fielded 9 Scottish players, Sunderland 11.
Following this win Liverpool went top of the League, but eventually finished in 5th place.
Former Sunderland player Davy Hannah, playing at outside left, scored all 3 goals for Liverpool.

Raich Carter

1937
Charles Buchan
Horatio Stratton Carter made his debut for Sunderland in October 1932. His career went on until 1952. He won the League Championship with Sunderland in 1936 (when he was also top scorer in the League) and the FA Cup the following season.
He represented England 13 times.
His father, Robert 'Toddler' Carter had played for Burslem Port Vale, Stockport County, Fulham and Southampton. He tragically died of an head injury when Raich was just 14.
Carter junior had a trial with Leicester at the age of 17, but was told he was too small to make it. He broke into the Sunderland first team as an 18 year old, standing 1.70m and weighing around 59 kg.
31.8.16
Ned Doig
Ned Doig joined Blackburn from Arbroath in 1889. His only appearance for Rovers was a 9-1 win over Notts County.
Doig made his debut for Sunderland in September 1890 and went on to make 454 first team competitive appearances for Sunderland, winning 4 First Division Championships.
He joined Liverpool (in Division 2) in 1904 and made 53 appearances for the Reds spread over 4 seasons.
Ned Doig represented Scotland 5 times over a 16 year period, finishing on the winning side 4 times.
Doig was originally an outfield player who took to goalkeeping with Arbroath Reserves as a 17 year old. Concious of his hair loss, Doig was never seen without his cap, which he would fasten under his chin with a piece of string.
On Easter Saturday 1900 Doig was involved in a curious incident- Manchester City goalkeeper Charlie Williams appeared to become the first goalkeeper to score from open play in the Football League, his long clearance eluding Doig. Some contemporary reports (there was no dubious goals panel!) say that Doig made the decisive touch, and credit him with an own goal. ENFA credits City inside left Fred Williams with the goal. Sunderland won 3-1.

Donald Gow
Sunderland full-back Donald Gow looks bemused at being photographed against a rather palustrine backdrop. The best years of Gow's career were divided between Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland. He won 2 League Championships with Sunderland.

He captained Scotland in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of England in 1888, his only international.

Last day drama -1903
On Saturday April 18th 1903 (which was FA Cup Final day) The Wednesday completed their League campaign with a 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at Owlerton (goals from Andy Wilson, Fred Spikesley and Ambrose Langley).
Sunderland, in second place , just one point behind, had a game in hand.
The following Saturday Sunderland traveled the 20 km to play their local rivals Newcastle United at St James' Park. A win would see them retain the League title (they had won 4 previous titles in total; Aston Villa held the record with 5).
Newcastle went ahead in the 48th minute- a short range effort from Robert Smyth McColl.
In the latter stages of the game, pressing for the equalizer, Sunderland changed formation to 1-4-5 (Rhodes 'joining the halves'). Under the rules of the day this led to a lot of off sides- much to the anger of the Newcastle fans.

A Great North Eastern Rivalry
Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland, lying less than 20km apart, are the 2 major settlements in the North East of England , an industrialised area that is traditionally passionate about football.
Sunderland FC began life as Sunderland and District Teachers in 1879. The name was changed to Sunderland AFC in 1881 and the club turned professional in 1885. They first entered the FA Cup in the 1884-85 season.
Sunderland joined the Football League in 1890.
Newcastle United was formed by the merger of Newcastle East End (1881) and Newcastle West End (1882) in 1892. It was effectively a take over of a financially weak West End by the professional East End (already a limited company). One way in which West End had outdone their rivals was in the quality of their base- St James'Park, and it was there that the 'new' club settled.
Refused entry to the Football League's First Division at the start of the 1892–93 season, they were invited to play in the newly founded Second Division. However, this was not seen as a lucrative proposition, so Newcastle United decided to remain in the Northern League.
The following year they joined Division 2 of the Football League.
01.09.06
Both clubs enjoyed Golden Eras: in the 1890s Sunderland were League Champions 3 times in 4 seasons. Between 1904 and 1911 Newcastle United reached 5 FA Cup finals and won 3 League titles.
