The Football League Seasons' Top Scorers 1889-1937

The Italians have Capocannoniere, and in Spain they award the Pichichi. I am not aware that the Football League ever had a name for the season's top scorer, or even a formal award.
The following table lists each season's top scorer, his nationality and club. The figures show the position the club finished in the league that season, how many goals the player scored, in how many games; how many goals per game he scored, and what percentage of his team's goals he scored.

Discussions of goal scoring records in English football rightly begin and end with William Ralf Dean.
60 goals in a season, at 1.5 goals per game, 58 % of his team's goals in a championship winning season. Say no more...
Mentions must also go to Steve Bloomer, who topped the list on 5 occasions...

Jack Southworth and Jack Bowers both registered 50% of their teams goals in a season...

... and perhaps most remarkable of all, W.G 'Ginger' Richardson- 39 goals for a West Bromwich Albion side that finished 18th in Division 1.
