Cheap Excursion
The prices shown are in shillings. There were 20 shillings to a pound
Skilled workers were on about £2 2/ (42 shillings) for a 50 hour week.
The Scottish players were nominally amateurs. The England line up included 6 professionals. These players were on about £3 per week during the season, £2 per week in the summer. Other than expenses (which amateurs also received) the FA did not pay the professionals for representing England.
The Victorian railway network played a great role in the rapid increase in the popularity of football in the 1880s. With the top clubs being concentrated in the North and the Midlands travel to away matches was relatively straightforward.

Nikolai Starostin
Strictly speaking this falls outside our era. Nikolai Starostin lived at 19a Ulitsa Tverskaya (Moscow) from 1961, when his playing days were long behind him, until his death in 1996.
Starotsin, who held the honour Hero of Socialist Labour and was a 3 time recipient of the Order of Lenin, also spent 11 years as a political prisoner (1942-53).
We'll include him here though for the role he played in developing Spartak Moscow, who emerged from the local Moscow scene to become the great populist side in the Soviet Union.
Notice how the colour scheme of the building next door resembles the Spartak jersey!

Domingos returned to Brazil in 1936 and had spells with Flamengo and Corinthians before returning to Bangu. His career lasted until 1950.
He was capped 30 times for Brazil, his debut coming in 1931.

Association Football Players Union
Armband worn by Manchester United in the 1909 season.
The team are reported to have worn these armbands in the opening fixture, a 1-0 win over Bradford City at Bank Street. Incidentally Billy Meredith (a champion of the union cause) was absent for this fixture- he missed the first 4 games of the season.

Donald Gow
Sunderland full-back Donald Gow looks bemused at being photographed against a rather palustrine backdrop. The best years of Gow's career were divided between Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland. He won 2 League Championships with Sunderland.
Glasgow Rangers 1885-91
Sunderland 1891–92
Glasgow Rangers 1892-93
Sunderland 1893–1897.
He captained Scotland in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of England in 1888, his only international.
