Scotland v England 1884

Played at Cathkin Park 15.03.84.
This was the inaugural season of the British Home Championship and the Scotland England clash was always likely to be the decider. This was the 13th meeting between the 2 sides. Scotland had won 8 of the previous 12 matches and England had not beaten them since 1879.
For the first time in international football admission was by ticket only.
Dr John Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 8th minute to give Scotland a 1-0 victory.
The illustration shows 'A Bailey' but it is in fact Norman Coles Bailey, while E.C Bambridge Swift is E.C Bambridge of the club The Swifts. Francis Marindin , here acting as Umpire for England was so well known as to be recognizable only by the title The Major.
The contrast in stature between the illustrated English and Scotch (sic) players is worthy of note. The era of the gentleman amateur was drawing to a close, but the England approach was still largely based on the muscular public schools approach whereas Scottish football was more tactically refined.

Scotch Team

The 9th Scotland v England match was the 3rd in a row to produce 9 goals.  On this occasion Scotland ran out winners by 5-4. The goals came from Kerr (3), Baird, and Kaye.
The term 'Scotch' was in common usage on both sides of the Tweed in the 19th century, and had not acquired the pejorative tone that it carries today. The English and Scottish press would refer to Scotch teams (and of course Scotch Professors). The Monday following this match the Glasgow Herald referred to the Victory of the Scotch Team.
The great (English) historian A. J. P. Taylor was using the word Scotch in the 1960s:
Some inhabitants of Scotland now call themselves Scots and their affairs Scottish. They are entitled to do so. The English word for both is Scotch, just as we call les français the French and Deutschland Germany. Being English, I use it.

John Smith

In 1885 Dr John Smith was banned from playing for or against any Scottish club or the Scottish national team because he had played for Corinthians against professionals. In his outings for Corinth he usually employed the pseudonym J. Miller.
Up until this point Dr Smith had scored 10 goals in 10 internationals for Scotland and had won the Scottish Cup with Queen's Park. He had also played for Queen's Park in an 'English' FA Cup Final. 
Following the ban he confined his activities to occasional matches with Corinthians.
He also toured the Antipodes with the 1888 British Rugby Union team.
