Leônidas

Leônidas da Silva (in the hoops of CR Flamengo) causes 'Panic in the defence of Botafogo'. Seemingly eccentric headgear was relatively commonplace in Brazilian football.

Leônidas has been referred to as the first Brazilian superstar. This photograph shows him as if he was an exotic exhibit screened from his adoring public.
His playing career stretched from 1929-1950, and in 19 internationals he scored 21 goals. 

Dori Kürschner

The Hungarian Izidor Kürschner-Szűcs, usually known as Dori Kürschner (or Dori Kruschner in Brazil) was one of the coaches who contributed to the evolution of the modern game in quite a subtle way. Even though he died in 1941, his greatest contribution to football probably came after 1937. As coach of Flamengo he changed the way Brazilians thought about tactics and formations, setting the stage for later triumphs.Kürschner played for MTK Budapest from 1904–1913. This was a succesful period for the club, who were coached by Jimmy Hogan from 1914. 
MTK won the Hungarian League in 1904 and 1907–08, and the cup 3 seasons in a row (1910-12). 
A left half or centre half, Kürschner made his international debut for Hungary in 1907. He won 5 caps over the next 4 years, never being a regular . Kürschner commenced his coaching career in 1918 with MTK.

  Kürschner replaced Hogan as coach at MTK, who were Hungarian champions that season.

1919-21 Stuttgart Kickers  (Germany)
During Kürschner's tenure at Kickers  they won their regional league (Kreisliga Württemberg).

1921 1 FC Nuremberg (Germany)
  Once Kickers were eliminated from the national Championships Kürschner was engaged by Nuremberg and  oversaw their successful defence of the title.

Bayern hired Kürschner as the replacement for Billy Townley.

When Bayern failed to progress in the national championships  Nuremberg invited him back and he was coach in the Eternal Final.

1923-24 FC Nordstern Basel (Switzerland)
Kürschner was Nordstern's first ever full time coach, and he took them into the first division. 

1924 Switzerland (National team)
Switzerland were coached by a Technical Commission made up of 3 members, each representing one of the regions of Switzerland (east, central and west). This was a remarkable triumvirate in which Kürschner served alongside the Englishmen Teddy Duckworth and Jimmy Hogan. Switzerland won the silver medal at the 1924 Olympics.

1925-34 Grasshopper (Switzerland)
Under Kürschner Grasshopper came to be highly regarded, with 3 national championships and 4 cup wins.

Brazilian football was still tactically naive. 2-3-5 still reigned. Kürschner introduced the WM formation along with European training and preparation methods.

Came across these charmers on the internet whilst doing some research on Brazilian football. I'm not sure of the date but I'm guessing by the style and the teams represented that it would be the 1920s? It seems that the set is not complete as of the famous  Rio clubs Vasco and Fluminense are notably absent.

América

Formed in 1904, América were founder members of Liga de Football do Rio de Janeiro (1905)
Champions in 1913,1916,1922, 1928, and 1931.

Americano

Americano FC was founded  on June 1st, 1914 , and was not connected with an earlier participant in the Carioca league, Sport Club Americano.

Andarahy

Andarahy (based in the Andaraí area ) participated in the Liga de Football do Rio de Janeiro from 1916 until 1937. 

Bangu Athletic Club 

Bangu were founder members of Liga de Football do Rio de Janeiro (1905).

 

Botafogo

Botafogo were founder members of Liga de Football do Rio de Janeiro (1905).
They were champions in 1907 (joint), 1910, 1930, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935.

CR Flamengo

The football branch of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo was founded  in 1911 by dissatisfied Fluminense members. One of the biggest club teams in World football, they were Carioca Champions in 1914,1915,1920,1921,1925, and 1927.

Palmeiras

Not an error- this is not the great Paulista club Palmeiras, who at this time were known as Palestra Italia. This Palmeiras was a modest Rio club who competed in the lower divisions of the Campeonata Carioca.

Manguiera 

Founded in1906 by workers in a hosiery factory. In 1909 Manguiera were on the receiving end of the biggest defeat in Carioca history, losing 24-0 to Botafogo. Never excelling in the league, the club folded in 1927.

São Cristóvão Atlético Clube

São Cristóvão Atlético Clube was founded in 1909, The modern incarnation, São Cristóvão de Futebol e Regatas, did not come into being until 1943 via a merger. The original  São Cristóvão  AC were Champions of Rio in 1926.

Mackenzie

Mackenzie was founded in 1914 and competed in the Campeonato Carioca in the early 1920s. They won the title in 1923 and abandoned top football with the rise of professionalism.

Vila Isabel

Founded in 1912 the proletarian club Vila Isabel competed in the second tier of the Campeonato Cariocas from 1917 to 1923 and again from 1926 to1928.

In recognition of their intense rivalry yet common origins the sage and writer Nelson Rodrigues (a devoted Fluminense fan)  described the great Rio rivals as The Brothers Karamazov of Brazilian football. 

Fluminense was founded by Oscar Cox in 1902. 

Alberto Borgerth was the son of a high ranking lawyer who joined Fluminense as a 15 year old. He also enjoyed the other elite sporting pastime of Rio at the time, rowing. He did his rowing with Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (founded in 1885).

In 1911 a group of Fluminense players left their club following a dispute with the club directors. Dure to Borgerth's connections with Clube de Regatas do Flamengo the footballers approached this club and proposed that they be accommodated as a football section. The football section of Flamengo was officially created on December 24th 1911.

The catchy name for the derby, Fla -Flu, was coined by journalist Mario Filho ( a Flamengo fan, but Nelson Rodrigues' brother) in 1933.
