Zuzu

Cunha Bueno, the Paulistano goalkeeper, in action against Palestra Itália in 1917.
Zuzu, as he was known, was a goalkeeper of desperation, noted for unconventional last ditch saves executed with all parts of his anatomy.
With Zuzu in goal Paulistano won the Campeonato Paulista in 1916,1917, 1918 & 1919.
Away from football he was a coffee farmer and exporter.
The ball in this photograph looks small. I have read that size 4 balls were used in Italy, I'm not sure if that was the case in South America too.

Spain vs Brazil 1934

The knockout format of the 1934 World Cup tournament meant that Brazil, Argentina and the United States only played one match each after their transatlantic voyages.
Here is an action shot from the Brazil v Spain match played at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa (27.05.34). Leônidas da Silva shooting wide, watched by Ricardo Zamora.
Brazil were 3-0 down in half an hour, Leônidas announced himself with a 55th minute strike. Brazil were awarded a penalty in the 62nd minute, but Zamora, playing in his 43rd international, saved from Waldemar de Brito.

FC Libertador

The city of Caxias do Sul in Rio Grande do Sul was founded by Italian migrants in 1890. The 2 major clubs in the city are Sociedade Esportiva e Recreativa Caxias do Sul (1935) and Esporte Clube Juventude (1913).
Pictured above is the team of FC Libertador from 1933. From what I can gather this was a team associated with the São Pedro woolen mill.

Domingos da Guia

skillful and authoritative defender,  Domingada has the distinction of having won major honours in 3 countries. Beginning his career at Bangu as a 17 year old he later joined Vasco da Gama. Having won the Uruguayan Championship with Nacional in 1933, he returned to Vasco, who won the 1934 (LCF) Campeonato Carioca. 1935 saw  Domingos helping Boca Juniors to the Argentinian championship.
Domingos returned to Brazil in 1936 and had spells with Flamengo and Corinthians before returning to Bangu. His career lasted until 1950.
He was capped 30 times for Brazil, his debut coming in 1931.

Taça Brasil de Seleções 1907

Football can play a significant role in  the development of a sense of national identity. In 1907 the president of Brazil, Snr Afonso Pena, donated a trophy to be awarded to ' National Champions'.

The first Rio de Janeiro championship had been decided in 1906 (Fluminense)  whilst the São Paulo championship had been in place since 1901 (Germania were the 1906 champions).
The governing bodies of football in the 2 principal cities (Liga Paulista de Foot-Ball (founded 1901) and Liga Metropolitana de Sports Athleticos (founded 1905)) decided against a championship playoff between the 2 champion clubs, and instead opted for a match between 2 league representative teams.
This overlooked the fact that a Bahia state championship had been played since 1905 (Clube de Natação e Regatas São Salvador were the reigning champions).
The 2 representative sides met first on 25.08.07 at São Paulo's Campo do Velódromo.
The line ups were:

Friedenreich with the Brazil team 1925

Arthur Friedenreich had a phenomenal goal scoring record. It is possible that he was the most prolific scorer in the history of the game.
Let's look at the statistics (or the reputed statistics) associated with Fried:
It has been traditionally asserted that he scored 1239 goals in 1329 games. This figure was supposedly the outcome of a contemporary record which was the work of 2 people; Friedenreich's father and his Paulistano team mate Mário de Andrade e Silva.  If we accept that Fried's career lasted from 1909 (when he was 17) until 1935 1329  games would equate to a shade over 49 games a season.  The scoring rate is 0.93 goals per game.
When Andrade died the records that he and Friedenreich Senior had kept were lost.
A journalist named De Vanney firstly accepted these figures as being accurate and then inexplicably reversed them to promote the claim that Fried had scored 1329 goals in 1239 games. This would have represented a strike rate of 1.07 goals per game.
Other figures (based on analysis of contemporary reports) have been 554 goals in 561 games (Alexandre da Costa) and 558 goals in 562 games (Severino Filho).
A detailed season by season record that appears on RSSSF Brazil gives figures of 557 goals in 562 games (acknowledging the absence of reliable records for a number of matches). This gives a strike rate of 0.99 goals per game.

Looking at this apparently comprehensive record of the matches that Friedenreich played in during his adult life it is hard to imagine where the 767 unrecorded matches (and 682 goals) could have come? There have been suggestions that Andrade might have included scratch matches and Torneio Início Paulista (in which teams would play a number of matches of 20 minutes in one day). Even if this was the case the defecit of 30 matches a season (spread over his entire career) seems excessive.
I am inclined to believe the RSSSF Brazil figures which whilst not accounting for the 1000+ goals that others claim for Fried, are very impressive indeed:
