The Sheriff of London Charity Shield

Introduced at the end of the 1897-98 season, this was a challenge match between the leading amateur club in the country and one of the leading professional clubs, for the benefit of charitable institutions, hospitals etc.
The competition was established by Thomas Dewar, the whisky magnate, and is sometimes referred to as The Dewar Shield.
And the trophy was as big as a man!
The  Dewar Shield  lapsed in 1908 following a rift between the leading amateur clubs and the FA.

Let's look at the ten editions of the Shield.
Corinthians were chosen as the amateur representatives 9 times. This was good business, as Corinth usually featured a number of international players. The professional representatives were not necessarily the league champions or FA Cup holders.
Professional teams triumphed on 6 occasions

Amatuer teams (ie Corinthian FC) won twice.
The Shield was shared twice.

Chinezul Timisoara

Chinezul Timisoara, founded in 1910, were named after Pavel Chinezul, a legendary Hungarian general who defeated the Ottomans in 1479. The club was formed by railway workers. Between 1911 and 1918 the team (as Temesvári Kinizsi) competed in the Hungarian league. After the 1914 -18 war the city of Timisoara became a part of Romania.
In 1922 Chinezul Timisoara won the first ever Romanian national championship. This was the first of 6 consecutive national title wins, a period of domination in Romanian football not equaled until the Steaua București era of the 1990s.
The format of the championship was a knockout competition between 7 regional champions. These were:

Cliftonville 1879-1910

John McAlery was responsible for the introduction of Association Football to Ireland. McAlery was a Belfast based clothier who imported tweeds from Scotland. In 1878 he was in Scotland on honeymoon when he saw a game of  football being played.
On his return to Belfast McAlery arranged for 2 Scottish teams, Queen's Park and Caledonian (Inverness), to play an exhibition match at the Ulster Cricket Ground. Queen's Park won 3-2.

The exhibition match took place in October 1878 and the following year McAlery decided to try and set up a football club to play Scottish Association Rules (which differed from those of the Football Association). He placed the above advertisement in the Belfast press and enlisted the support of fellow members of Cliftonville Cricket Club.
Cliftonville became a major force in Irish football (which, in the early days, focused almost exclusively on Belfast).
