Zuzu

Cunha Bueno, the Paulistano goalkeeper, in action against Palestra Itália in 1917.
Zuzu, as he was known, was a goalkeeper of desperation, noted for unconventional last ditch saves executed with all parts of his anatomy.
With Zuzu in goal Paulistano won the Campeonato Paulista in 1916,1917, 1918 & 1919.
Away from football he was a coffee farmer and exporter.
The ball in this photograph looks small. I have read that size 4 balls were used in Italy, I'm not sure if that was the case in South America too.

Aberystwyth Town Internationals

 Roose

Welsh Premier League club Aberystwyth Town (founded 1884) has provided Wales with 7 internationals (18 appearances). The club's predecessor, Aberystwyth, also produced 1 cap.
When Wales faced Scotland at Dundee on 21.03.96 there were 3 Aberystwyth Town players in the team.
The legendary goalkeeper Leigh Richmond Roose was said to have worn an Aberystwyth Town jersey as an undershirt throughout his first class career.

Yustrich is at the top- Jaime Lema (San Lorenzo de Almagro) below.

Juan Yustrich was Boca's first choice goalkeeper from 1932-37, winning league titles in 1934 and 1935. He represented Argentina once (in 1940).

Amsel Ignác

15.04.28:  Amsel Ignác, The Spider,  puts the ball over his crossbar during Ferencváros' 5-1 win over Kispest.

Between 1921 and 1931 Amsel represented Hungary 9 times, but was only on the winning side once. On a positive note he became the first Hungarian goalkeeper to save a penalty in internationals (v Austria, 1923).

Roose saves from Morris

The evolution of halftone printing techniques led to the widespread use of photographs in the mass media. The Athletic News was prominent among the publications that brought this exciting presentation of football action to the masses.
As in the previous post, we have 2 Welsh players in opposition here.
Dick Roose of Sunderland saves from Gren Morris of Nottingham Forest. The match, at Roker Park, ended in a 2-2 draw (15.10.10).

1904 FA Cup Final

The first all Lancashire Final.
Billy Meredith scored in the 23rd minute, beating his countryman Dai Davies with a left footed shot. In the illustration Davies (who had played for Swinton in the 1900 Northern Union Rugby Challenge Cup Final)  looks almost like a disinterested bystander.

FA Cup Final 1903

This is one of those records that I don't think we'll see beaten; the most onesided FA Cup Final.
It was a case of one game too many for Derby, who were hampered by injuries. Most significantly Steve Bloomer was absent, whilst  Fryer, Morris and Goodall all came into the final carrying knocks.
The relative strengths of these two sides can be judged from the fact that they finished the 1902-03 League season level on points (in 8th & 9th places)
Bury reached the final without conceding a single goal.

Derby Daily Telegraph

Both teams wore change colours, Bury sky blue and Derby County red.

Derby goalkeeper Fryer sustained a further injury in the 1st half and was incapacitated altogether soon after the break. Bury's 2nd goal in the 49th minute was a significant turning point. Fryer went off after colliding with Sagar as the latter scored. Morris went into goal and Derby played 1-3-5. Under the rules of the day this created an effective offside trap, but Bury soon overcame this inconvenience. Fryer returned with the score at 3-0  but conceded twice in rapid succession and left the field permanently after the 5th goal.
The Sheffield Independent described the match as '(the) worst final. tame and dull', commenting on the  subdued atmosphere in the 1st half, the pessimism of the Derby fans and the fact that thousands of spectators were leaving the ground after 70 minutes.
Other accounts portray Derby as being anxious, lacklustre, and showing poor ball control.

Fryer

This was Fryer's last game for Derby, who signed Grimsby Town's Walter Whittaker the week after the Final. It was ultimately Harry Maskrey, however, who became Fryer's long term replacement, going on to play 223 matches for County.
Fryer, a big man for the times at  6 ft 1 and  15 st (1.85, 95kg) moved to Fulham that May.

Brothers Bruno and Gino Jacoponi, a goalkeeper and a forward respectively, played for Livorno  in the Prima Categoria final of 1920.

US Livorno 1920.

In 1923 the brothers moved to Chile where they joined Audax Club Sportivo Italiano.
Audax won the Copa Ismael Pereira Íñiguez in 1924.
Gino Jacoponi was still playing for Audax in 1933, the year of the first Chilean national championships.

Top European Goalkeepers of the 1920s & 1930s

The 1920s and 1930s saw the emergence of some top class goalkeepers across Europe.
They were still vulnerable to physical assault through rushes and charges, and the emphasis, even with the advent of the 3 back game, was still very much on attack.
Here we will look at the international records of 6 notable goalkeepers.

1. Ricardo Zamora - Spain (1920-36)

2. Harry Hibbs - England (1929-36)

3. Josef/ Rudolf Hiden - Austria (1928-33)*

4.Gianpiero Combi - Italy (1924-34)

5. František Plánička - Czechoslovakia (1926-38)

Zamora comes out on top. His win percentage, goals against per game and percentage of clean sheets are all superior.

*Hiden played one game for France in 1940 which is not included in these figures.
